The dance of Dorje Phurba

Dance

All traditions and cultures express themselves through dance – it is part of our natural human condition to convey our feelings through movement. In Tibetan sacred dance (cham) we embody the awareness being (sense of being a Buddha) and allow that expression to flow through our whole body by moving in dance. This is a form of tantric meditation through movement – we are transforming our being into that of the awareness being. To perform these dances allows us to experience the power of being a Buddha throughout our physical form. We can also express the infinite compassion of communication to the audience who is watching the dances.

At Aro Ling we will teach the sacred dances of Dorje Phurba, the Vulture Dances, and the dance form of the Gartak martial art. These are traditional forms of Tibetan Dance with costume and musical accompaniment. Dance requires a certain level of physical fitness but can be adapted somewhat to allow participation. Costume making and performing in the ‘tantric orchestra’ are also ways in which participation in this special form of practice can be enjoyed by a wide audience.
