Aro element pulse diagnosis

Several local Aro teachers are experienced in a range of therapies and techniques, including in a form of Pulse Diagnosis unique to the Aro Buddhist Tradition. By listening to the quality of a patient’s pulses, their present condition can be assessed in terms of which elements they reflect – earth, water, fire, air or space – and whether they are increasing or decreasing in their movement. By comparing an understanding of this subtle energetic condition with an appreciation of the patient as a whole, a picture of the individual can be obtained, and treatment recommended in terms of Tibetan medicine, diet, and exercise.

The practice of Elemental Pulse Diagnosis finds its origins in 19th century Tibet with Stone Echo diagnosis practiced by a remarkable female practitioner called Jomo Chhi’med Pema. In remote southern Tibet the nature and direction of a patient’s pulse were determined by holding a stone to the patients head, and striking it, with the patient reporting the location of the sound heard within the head. In modernity pulses are normally diagnosed using a sphygmomanometer and stethoscope.
